Finding Home in the Heart of the Amazon

His journey took him first to Belgium, where he was granted political asylum and ultimately to Brazil, a place that would transform his life in unexpected ways. In Manaus, deep in the heart of the Amazon, Ilko found both a home and the love of his life. What began as a leap into the unknown, became a lifelong story of belonging. Over the decades, he built a successful business career in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, becoming part of the vibrant, diverse community of the Amazon region. Parallel to his business career he also ran the activity of an honorary consul of the Netherlands in the Amazon state.

Born in Bulgaria, Shaped by History

Ilko Minev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1946, growing up under the weight of communism during a time when personal freedom and creative expression were tightly controlled. From an early age, he was drawn to books and storytelling, which were an escape into worlds beyond the one he knew. In his 20s, he got involved with a dissident students’ movement at the University of Sofia and was persecuted by the communist regime. It was then that he realized that he had no future in Bulgaria and made the bold decision to escape the Iron Curtain.

Bridging Cultures and Generations

Having lived in Brazil for more than fifty years, Ilko proudly calls himself a “caboclo,” a local term for people of mixed heritage from the Amazon. He feels deeply connected to the people, culture, and natural beauty of the region, yet his Jewish-Bulgarian roots remain an inseparable part of his identity. His family’s history is marked by resilience, stories of survival during war, persecution under totalitarian regimes, and the pursuit of a better life. These personal and ancestral experiences have become the heartbeat of his fiction.

Returning to a Lifelong Passion

Although his professional life flourished, Ilko never lost his love for reading and writing. Literature remained a quiet constant, a passion waiting patiently in the background. After retiring in 2012, he finally turned that lifelong dream into reality, publishing his first novel at the age of 66. Writing wasn’t a new pursuit. It was a return to something that had always been part of him.

Join the Journey

For Ilko, writing is more than a creative outlet – it’s an act of remembrance and connection. His stories remind readers that even in the most turbulent times, there is space for hope, identity, and the search for belonging. Whether exploring the struggles of migration, the echoes of history, or the quiet resilience of the human spirit, Ilko Minev writes with the conviction of someone who has lived many lives and carries them all, gracefully, onto the page.

Stories That Illuminate Forgotten Histories

In his 4 novels, Ilko blends historical truth with imagination to illuminate forgotten moments of history. His work often draws on real events that touched his own life or his family’s, stories that deserve to be remembered, yet remain little known to the wider world. Through fiction, he gives voice to those silenced by time and circumstance, using storytelling as a bridge between memory and meaning.
